I love Alice in Wonderland, which you might have guessed since my blog is aptly titled … but I quickly came to realize I had precious few Alice in Wonderland costumes! For shame! The idea for coming up with a themed mad tea party to which I could “invite” (read: create) all of my favorite characters of Wonderland was actually born just over a year ago. It started on Pintrest, as many such party ideas do, as a possible wedding theme idea. Just for… whenever. You know, that secret board most of us have hidden away…
The more I started thinking about the Alice in Wonderland tea party theme, the more I realized that it would be the perfect setting for a cast of characters, from the White Rabbit to the Cheshire Cat. True to myself, I embarked on a massive planning mission spanning the better part of a year that encompassed the creation of the set, re-upholstering up-cycled chairs, teaching myself to bake macaroons, collecting tea party decorations, and creating three new costumes including an Alice in Wonderland Bridal Gown, with new appearances of the Mad Hatter costume and Alice costumes.
But first thing’s first… it’s time for tea!
Alice in Wonderland Mad Tea Party
The first thing I started on was finding chairs to up-cycle and re-upholster, either for free with craigslist curb alerts or for incredibly cheap (like, side of the road on clean up week). Yep… throwing a mad tea party can get pricy fast unless you find a few ways to cut costs. I’m trilled at how well these turned out, just look at that adorable blue chair!
I also had fun experimenting with all kinds of treats, including mastering my macaroon technique (meaning I didn’t fail miserably) and ADORABLE mini glazed succulent cakes!
June seriously has some of the best light. It may have been a sweltering day, but these fake flowers were not fazed 😛
It’s also important to set the whole scene in addition to the table. Luckily, I already had this beautiful lace print dresser I DIY’d a few years ago.
